The Four Key Trends In The Baking Industry

Baking is no different to every other industry in that there are trends which ebb and flow. Any baker needs to be aware of those changes in order to be able to react and stay ahead of the curve. A failure to react could have a catastrophic effect on your business, and in that light, as one of the leading providers of flour in the industry, we have put together the top four current key trends that you need to be aware of.

Health:

Consumers are becoming a lot more focused on healthy eating, which then has a direct impact on their buying decisions. Demand for wholemeal flour and flour with seeds and additional grains has increased substantially over the last few years, and it is important that you factor this into any recipes you use or even when planning the different types and quantities of bread you are baking.

Not having enough seeded bread types, for instance, could result in your customers looking elsewhere, at which point it could prove challenging, if not impossible, to get them to return.

Sustainability:

At Nelstrops, we are committed to ensuring that our practices and products are designed with the environment in mind and not compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. This is a core value within our company and is not just words but is demonstrated by the actions that we take. Some examples of this include the fact that all of our flour is packed in recyclable paper bags with paper approved by the Forest Stewardship Council. We have virtually zero waste at the mill, with all of the grain that comes to the mill being used for either food or animal feed. We also invest in renewable energy. We have a significant solar installation at the mill and we are in the process of adding even more solar generated power.

Local Ingredients:

We use 100% English wheat for all of our soft flours and in our breadmaking flours without compromising on quality. Over 80% of the wheat we use comes from England, with all our grain traceable back to the farm where it was grown. We believe using locally produced wheat in terms of the environment is important, as it minimises our carbon footprint. We take this a stage further when it comes to the delivery of our products by maximising the amount we put on each vehicle to reduce the number of lorries and planning the best delivery routes.

Cost Of Living:

You only need to pick up a newspaper or watch the news for five minutes to know that a huge cost of living crisis is affecting the United Kingdom. People are looking for opportunities to make cost savings and reduce the amount of money they are using to feed their families. Purchasing quality flour from Nelstrops in our 16 kg bags provides our customers with a plethora of options to save money in many ways without compromising on the quality of their food.

Buying a larger 16 kg bag is cost-effective for us as a company, allowing us to pass on the savings to our customers. It also provides our customers with the ingredients to make a range of different food items while saving significant money compared to buying ready-made foods in the supermarket.

At Nelstrops, we value our place in the local community and do everything we can to help our customers live healthily and affordably. This also applies to our business customers, who we work with closely to try and reduce environmental impact and cost.

Nelstrops has over 200 years of tradition and expertise in flour milling, but that does not mean that we ever rest on our laurels. We constantly innovate and focus on improving every aspect of our business.
