Is Strong White Flour Different From Bread Flour?
The simple answer to this question is no; these two products are essentially identical; they are just referred to differently in America and Great Britain. Strong flour is called bread flour in the United States, plain flour is called all-purpose flour in the States, and the only type of flour that shares the same name is self-raising flour.
Should Strong White Bread Flour Be Used For All Bread Making Activities?
The short answer is – yes (…mostly!). The only real exceptions are if you want to make wholemeal bread, where you would use wholemeal bread flour, or Irish soda bread where you would use plain flour (with baking powder) or self raising flour. Pizzas are best made with strong white bread flour.
Is White Bread Flour Made From Wheat Flour?
Flour is a 100 per cent natural product made by milling grains, and in the vast majority of cases, wheat grains. White flour, the primary ingredient in white bread flour, is made by removing the outer layers of bran and leaving the white endosperm at the centre of the grain.
This uses about 75 per cent of the grain. This is one of the key differences between white bread flour and wholemeal flour. Wholemeal, which is also referred to as whole grain flour, uses 100 percent of the grain.

Because wholemeal flour includes 100 per cent of the grain, it is rich in vitamins B-1, B-3, and B-5, along with riboflavin, folate, and most importantly, fibre. Fibre is one of the biggest deficiencies in the British diet.
Compared to strong white bread flour, it is higher in iron, calcium, protein, and many other nutrients. This type of flour can be used in many different recipes and is perfectly safe to use in any bread machine.
